Field Set for Copper Top Futurity
RSS Feeds Sunday, March 26, 2017

The field for the April 16, $150,000-est. Copper Top Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds has been set after three 4 1/2-furlong trials were contested at Sunland Park on Saturday.

Red Raider, a homebred son of Roll Hennessy Roll owned by Brad King and Dale Taylor, made his debut with a clear 6 1/4-length victory in the first trial. Ridden by Alfredo Juarez Jr. for trainer Todd Fincher, the gelding went 4 1/2 furlongs in :51.26.

Red Raider is out of Follow My Tail, a winning Kentucky-bred 9-year-old daughter of 1998 Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner Indian Charlie and a half sister to two stakes winners, including listed stakes winner Speedway.

P J’s Gold, a homebred son of the Mr. Greeley stallion Mr. Gold Mover trained by Henry Dominguez for owner Paul Jenson, won the second trial by three-quarters of a length in :51.22. Making his career debut, the colt was ridden by Enrique Gomez.

P J’s Gold is the first starter produced by the Silver Season mare Shes A Looker R F.

Gomez also rode Storm The Beach to a three-length win in the third heat. A $28,000 yearling buy from breeders Tom and Leslie Goncharoff of Tularosa, New Mexico, at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale, Storm The Beach is trained by Fred Danley for owner J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas.

Storm The Beach is by Attila’s Storm out of the winning 8-year-old Pulpit mare Beach Club.

The top three finishers from Saturday’s three trials made the Copper Top final and will be joined by one of the fourth-place finishers, who will be determined in a blind draw. The fourth-place finishers were: Smooth Talkin Red, Western Warning, and Ghost Of Creebear.

The complete list of qualifiers, minus the finalist to draw in, appears in alphabetical order below.
