Field Set for Mountain Top Thoroughbred Futurity
RSS Feeds Saturday, July 16, 2016
The field for this year’s 5-furlong, $173,171 Mountain Top Throughbred Futurity (R) has been set after three trials were contested on a sealed and wet-fast track at Ruidoso Downs on Friday.

Trainer Todd Fincher swept all three heats, winning the first heat with Heat Stroke, a homebred daughter of Southwestern Heat racing for R.D. Hubbard; the second trial with Ignored, a homebred stakes-winning gelding by The Way Home owned by Steve Prather and Bessie Prather; and the third heat with Hubbard’s Another Brother, a homebred Attila’s Storm gelding.

Heat Stroke was winning for the first time in two outs. The filly is one of two winners from as many starters produced by Cocktail Girl, a winning 8-year-old Hennessy mare and a half sister to three stakes winners, including Virginie (BRZ), the winner of the 1999 Beverly Hills Handicap (G1) at Hollywood Park.

An earner of $74,254 from four starts, Ignored has won two races, including the May 3, 4 1/2-furlong Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park. The gelding, who was supplemented to the Mountain Top trials for a $10,000 fee, is a full brother to two-time 2-year-old stakes winner My Homey and a half to 2-year-old stakes winner Quinton’s Place.

Another Brother broke his maiden in the third heat. The gelding is a full brother to four-time stakes winner Reaper and three-time stakes winner Thermal.

The top three finishers from Friday’s three trials made the Mountain Top Futurity final and will be joined by one of the fourth-place finishers, who will be determined in a draw. The fourth-place finishers were Stilts McGee, Tiny’s Storm, and Echo Eight.
