NMHBA Honors Its State-Bred Champions

The New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association honored its 2015 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse champions during its Zia Awards Banquet at the Marriott Uptown Hotel in Albuquerque on Thursday.

During the banquet, which was emceed by longtime racing media personality Chris Lincoln, a total of 20 awards were presented. Breeders Fred Alexander, Todd Fincher, and Brad King were honored with the 2015 Julep Cup by The Blood-Horse Magazine of Lexington, Kentucky. Alexander, Fincher, and King were the breeders of Diabolical Dame, a gray or roan daughter of Diabolical who won six consecutive races last season, including five stakes.

Astica, a daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White and the 2015 American Quarter Horse Association champion 3-year-old filly, was last year’s champion New Mexico-bred 3-year-old Quarter Horse filly. A homebred racing for Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico, Astica earned $267,263 from January 1, 2015 through January 3, 2016, and her six wins in seven starts included four stakes victories, two of which were graded. The filly also broke The Downs at Albuquerque’s 400-yard track record when she won the May 10, $60,000 Pelican Stakes (R) for state-bred sophomore fillies.

The following Quarter Horses were also honored: BL Corona (champion older mare, owned by Bertha S. Irigoyen, bred by Jovi Investment Corp.), Cinco Menudos (champion older horse/gelding, owned by William G. McCarty, bred by William G. McCarty, Paul Wood, and SW Paving and Grading Inc.), Major Moonflash (champion 3-year-old gelding, owned by Leslie A. and Pierre J. Amestoy Jr., bred by Mike C. Abraham), Chickaloni (owned by David Hinkins and Ross Hinkins, bred by Dosi and Norma Alvarez), and RG Miracle (owned by Shirley A. Grisham, bred by Grisham Quarter Horses Inc.).

Jesse James Jr was the top Quarter Horse stallion, as the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed 15-year-old son of champion Mr Jess Perry sired the earners of $2,893,483 and was represented by eight stakes winners, including graded stakes winners Astica, Major Moonflash, Cinco Menudos, and Osbaldo. Jesse James Jr is owned by and stands at MJ Farms.

Jess Marmeta was honored as last year’s top freshman Quarter Horse stallion. An unraced 7-year-old son of the Mr Jess Perry and the winning Pritzi Dash mare Marmeta, Jess Marmeta was owned by Tommy R. Bouldin, and he is standing the 2016 season in Clovis, New Mexico.

The top Quarter Horse broodmare for 2015 was Mike Abraham’s Authorized Love, a 19-year-old winning and stakes placed daughter of Dooley Authorized and the Zevi (TB) mare Zevis Lady Love. Authorized Love is the dam of Moonstruck Love, the winner of last year’s $201,609 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park, and Flash Of Love, the winner of last year’s $337,186 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs.

Diabolical Dame, a filly by Diabolical out of the Devon Lane mare Vipervapor, was honored as the champion New Mexico-bred 3-year-old filly for 2015. Racing for Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, and Derrol Hubbard, who acquired the filly from breeders Fred Alexander, Todd Fincher, and Brad King for $25,000 at the 2013 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Diabolical Dame won six of seven starts and banked $234,200, and her five stakes victories included a 2 3/4-length win against open stakes company in the 6 1/2-furlong, $55,000 Casino at The Downs Stakes at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Other NMHBA Thoroughbred awards went to My Bikini Fell Off (champion older mare, owned and bred by Brian A. Mundell), Wyatt (champion older horse/gelding, owned and bred by Chris P. Hourigan), Lonnie Ton (champion 3-year-old colt/gelding, owned and bred by Maurcenia Cross and Jim Fox), Indian Tiva (champion 2-year-old filly, owned and bred by Barbara J. Brown), and Stormin The Jewels (champion 2-year-old colt/gelding, owned by J & SM Inc., bred by Cynthia H. Dick).

Diabolical was honored as the top Thoroughbred stallion for 2015. A Kentucky-bred Grade 2-winning son of Artax owned by Fred Alexander and J. Kirk Robison and the sire of Diabolical Dame, the stallion stands at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.

Shame On Charlie was last year’s top freshman Thoroughbred stallion. A 12-year-old winning son of Indian Charlie and full brother to two-time Eclipse Award winner Indian Blessing, Shame On Charlie is the sire of Indian Tiva. The stallion is owned by Barbara J. Brown and stands at Chaparral Farm at Hobbs, New Mexico.

Vipervapor, a stakes-winning 15-year-old mare by Devon Lane owned by Fred Alexander, Todd Fincher, and Brad King, and the dam of Diabolical Dame, was last year’s top Thoroughbred broodmare.

Also, Too Flash For You was honored with an award as the latest New Mexico-bred million-dollar earner. An open Grade 1-winning 5-year-old son of champion First Moonflash owned by Jim and Michele Laird and Jose R. Espinosa, the gelding has banked $1,008,870 from 20 races. Too Flash For You was the 2014 champion New Mexico-bred sophomore colt/gelding.

A total of 131 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses has been entered in Sunday’s New Mexico Cup races at Zia Park. Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
