RSS Feeds Sunday, October 27, 2013

Trainer Joel Marr saddled the winners of three of eight Thoroughbred races during Sunday’s 12-race, $2-million New Mexico Cup program at Zia Park.

Marr won two races for owner Michael C. Stinson -- the 6-furlong, $170,720 New Mexico Cup Sprint Championship (R) with Attitude E Racer, and the 1-mile, $170,120 Peppers Pride New Mexico Cup Filly & Mare Championship (R) with Iplaytricks. Both Attitude E Racer and Iplaytricks won their respective races for the second consecutive year.

Marr also won the 6-furlong, $140,600 New Mexico Cup Colts & Geldings Championship (R) for 3-year-olds with Chica’s Minister, a bay gelding by Minister Eric who has won all four of his starts for owner Jim Volk.

Trainer Todd Fincher sent out the winners of two New Mexico Cup Thoroughbred stakes. On the jockeys’ side, Francisco Giles, Jaime Parga Leos, and Dusty Shepherd all rode the winners of two races. Leos won the day’s richest race, the 400-yard, $288,830 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Futurity (RG2), with Debra J. Laney’s Mitey Moon.

Zia Park management reported on-track attendance at 1,264, a slight increase over the 2012 New Mexico Cup attendance of 1,258. Total handle reached $553,341, of which $104,953 was wagered on track and $448,388 was bet off-track.

Purses reached a New Mexico Cup record $2,002,285, making it once again the richest one-day state-bred racing program in the United States.
