All American Derby Trials Draw 73 Sophomores, Including Five New Mexico-Breds
RSS Feeds Sunday, August 14, 2011
Friday's 440-yard All American Derby (G1) trials at Ruidoso Downs have attracted 73 3-year-olds, including five New Mexico-breds.

Ruidoso's nine-race program on Friday consists entirely of All American Derby trials. Post time for the first race is 12 p.m. (MDT). The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the $1,316,760 final on Sunday, September 4.

The New Mexico-bred sophomores entered on Friday are – David E. Barrett's Wilmon (trial 1), KH Logax Inc.'s A Streak Again (trial 2), Richard R. Shearer's Might Be Southern (trial 5), Richard and Patricia Shearer's Secretsofthesouth (trial 6), and Jay and Mary Lou Standefer's Brookstone Flash (trial 8).

A homebred gray Chicks Regard gelding, A Streak Again has earned $175,842, more than any other New Mexico-bred All American Derby hopeful. A Streak Again scored a 52-1 upset victory in last year's $351,963 Zia Futurity (RG1) for state-bred 2-year-olds at Ruidoso Downs.

Wilmon was the sale-topper at the 2009 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale. The chestnut gelding by the late Dash Ta Fame is coming off of a fifth-place finish against state-breds in the July 31, $121,219 Zia Derby (RG2).

The All American Derby is the richest stakes race for older Quarter Horses, and its winner earns a berth in the Champion of Champions (G1) at Los Alamitos. Click here for a complete list of All American Derby trial entries from the official Ruidoso Downs overnight sheet.
