Ruidoso Downs will be at the center of the Quarter Horse racing world this week, as the track hosts 20 All American Futurity (G1) trials on Thursday and seven All American Derby (G1) trials on Friday.
First post time for Thursday’s card will be 11 a.m. (MDT), while Friday’s nine-race program will get underway at 12 p.m. Friday’s last race is scheduled for 3:28, which is about one hour before the New Mexico-Bred Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse Yearling Sale is scheduled to begin at the Ruidoso Horse Sales Pavilion.
A total of 197 2-year-olds are entered in the 440-yard All American Futurity trials, headed by four of the top five horses listed in the AQHA/Horseplayernow.com poll. The top-ranked 2-year-old,
American Runaway
, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the 18th trial, while second-ranked
Hes Too Icy For Me
is entered in the 10th heat, third-ranked
Givinitaroyaleffort
is in the 14th trial, and fifth-ranked
Llano Teller
will race in heat 12.
An Ocean Runaway colt racing for Sammy Martinez, Johnny Martinez, and Bobby D. Cox, American Runaway is the top earner among the 197 entries at $458,373 from seven races, and his three wins include the June 13, $500,000 Ruidoso Futurity (G1).
Hes Too Icy For Me is the 3-1 morning-line choice in his trial. Owned by Robert and Delores Gerhardt, the gray colt by all-time leading sire First Down Dash is coming off of a nose victory over American Runaway in the $625,000 Rainbow Futurity (G1) on July 25.
Givinitaroyaleffort will be making his first start at Ruidoso Downs after three starts during the Remington Park spring meet. The winner of the May 29, $1-million Heritage Place Futurity at odds of 25-1, the sorrel colt by First Down Dash has banked $422,218 for his owner, the LMR2010 partnership.
Llano Teller is a Grade 1-winning son of 2005 All American Futurity winner Teller Cartel racing for Reed Land & Cattle Co. and Wootan Racing. Llano Teller has won four of seven starts, including the April 17 Remington Park Futurity (G1), and he has earned $428,305.
The final All American Futurity trial is scheduled for 6:36. The top 10 qualifiers will meet in the $2-million final on Labor Day, September 6.
Friday’s 440-yard All American Derby trials drew 68 3-year-olds vying for 10 starting berths in the stakes-record $1,548,076 final on September 5. The winner of the final will earn a berth in the Grade 1, 440-yard Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in December.

, a sorrel gelding by Agouti who won the 440-yard, $569,143 Rainbow Derby (G1) on July 24; 2009 All American Futurity (G1) winner and AQHA champion 2-year-old

, a homebred Brookstone Bay filly racing for Albert Richard and Chad Richard; and Denis and Julie Schoenhofer’s
First Klas Fred
, a bay gelding by the late Fredricksburg and last year’s AQHA champion 2-year-old gelding.
