American Runaway is Fastest Ruidoso Futurity Qualifier
RSS Feeds Friday, May 28, 2010

American Runaway, a colt by Ocean Runaway racing for Sammy Martinez and Johnny Martinez, won the sixth of 19 Ruidoso Futurity (G1) trials on Friday and posted the fastest qualifying time for the $500,000 final on June 13.

Saddled by Paul Jones and ridden by Cody Jensen, American Runaway went 350 yards on a fast track in :17.138 while recording a 104 speed index and defeating first-time starter Downtown Fantasy by 4 ¾ lengths. The colt’s victory was his first in four starts, and it pushed his earnings to $106,273.

American Runaway was bred in Utah by Lance K. Robinson, and the colt is one of 50 winners from 138 starters sired by Ocean Runaway, an 8-year-old son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash and the sport’s champion 2-year-old in 2004 and champion sophomore colt the following year. Ocean Runaway has sired four stakes winners and the earners of more than $1.3 million, and he stands for a private fee at 6666 Ranch at Guthrie, Texas.

American Runaway is also one of two winners from as many starters foaled by the winning Strawfly Special mare Allamericandreamgirl, who is a half sister to three graded stakes winners, including champions Heartswideopen and Special Phoebe. The colt’s second dam, the Dash For Cash mare Special Phoebe, was the sport’s champion 2-year-old filly in 1985 and champion 3-year-old filly in ’86.

Campaigned at Remington Park this spring, American Runaway ran second as a 48-1 longshot in the April 17, $596,041 Remington Park Futurity (G1).
