An Absolut Diamond Posts Fastest Zia Derby Trial Time

G.R. Carter Jr. rode An Absolut Diamond to a three-quarter length victory in the second of four Zia Derby (RG2) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday.

A homebred gelding by champion Ketel Won trained by Mike Joiner for owners Sandy Farrris, Marc Jungers, and Lisa McMinn, An Absolut Diamond covered his 400-yard trip in :19.321 and recorded the fastest qualifying time for the $128,375 Zia Derby final on Sunday, July 28.

An Absolut Diamond has won three of seven outs and has earned $58,458. The gelding's race record includes a third-place finish as the fastest qualifier in the January 5, $252,796 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Second-fastest qualifier Brotherman, a homebred gelded son of Jesse James Jr, won the first trial by a half of a length in :19.340 under jockey L. Salvador Martinez. Emmitt Burelsmith Jr. trains Brotherman for owner Craig Joplin.

Astica, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, will face older distaffers for the first time in Wednesday’s 400-yard, $140,000-added New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. The New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship is one of two state-bred stakes and eight stakes scheduled for Wednesday’s third annual “Land of Enchantment” Day program at Zia Park. Post time for the first of 11 races is set for 12:15 p.m. (MST).
