Apollitical Jess Posts Fastest All American Derby Trial Time
RSS Feeds Monday, August 23, 2010

Rancho el Cabresto Inc.’s Apollitical Jess is the fastest qualifier for the 440-yard All American Derby (G1) at Ruidoso Downs on September 5.

Prepped by Juan Aleman and ridden by Eduardo Nicasio, Apollitical Jess on Friday won the fourth of eight trials in :20.878 while earning a 104 speed index and his fifth victory in 10 races. The colt’s winning margin was a half of a length from second-fastest qualifier Double Down Special.

Apollitical Jess was bred in California by Juan Alberto Tirado Lizarraga, and he is one of 563 winners from 12 crops sired by Mr Jess Perry, an 18-year-old son of the Streakin Six stallion Streakin La Jolla and the AQHA champion 2-year-old in 1994. The colt is also one of two starters foaled by Apollitical Time, an 8-year-old daughter of Apollo (TB) who was the AQHA champion sophomore filly in ’05 and champion aged horse the following season.

An earner of $345,170, Apollitical Jess ran second, a neck behind Good Reason SA, in last year’s $2-million Los Alamitos Two-Million Futurity (G1).

Earlier this year, Double Down Special assembled a four-race win streak that included the Ruidoso (G1) and West Texas (G3) derbies. The bay gelding races for Vanessa Bartoo of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

This year’s All American Derby offers a stakes-record purse of $1,548,076. In addition to the winner’s share of the record purse, the winner will earn a berth in the Grade 1 Champion of Champions at Los Alamitos in December.
