Astica, Happy Hennessy Dominate on Land of Enchantment Day

New Mexico-breds Astica and Happy Hennessy both scored impressive victories on Wednesday’s $1.28-million Land of Enchantment Day program at Zia Park.

Making her first start in nearly 10 months, Astica won the 400-yard, $140,000 New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship Stakes (RG1) for state-bred distaffers. Prepped by Wes Giles and ridden by Salvador Martinez for Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico, Astica won by 3 1/4 lengths in :19.452 while earning her ninth win in 13 outs and pushing her lifetime bankroll to $392,923.

Astica has won five stakes and was last year’s AQHA champion 3-year-old filly.

Happy Hennessy won the 1-mile and 70-yard, $140,000 Eddy County Stakes (R) for state-bred juveniles for owner Fred Danley, who also trains the homebred Roll Hennessy Roll gelding. Ridden by Enrique Gomez, Happy Hennessy defeated Dom Strait by seven lengths in 1:44.25.

Happy Hennessy was winning for the first time in nine starts, and the $84,000 winner’s share of the Eddy County Stakes purse bumped his earnings to $148,770.

Gary and Mary West’s Family Tree, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Smart Strike trained by Wayne Catalano, won the program’s signature race, the 1 1/16-mile, $300,000 Zia Park Oaks for 3-year-old fillies. Sent to post as the 13-10 favorite in a field of nine, Family Tree covered the distance in 1:43.59 under jockey Florent Geroux.

Bettors throughout North America responded to Zia Park’s large fields by wagering $2,091,079 on the 10-race program, including $2,021,139 off-track. This year’s total Land of Enchantment Day handle topped last year’s figure of $1,192,683 for 11 races by 69 percent.
