Astica Looks to Rebound in Lou Wooten Sydney Valentini Handicap
RSS Feeds Saturday, December 26, 2015
Astica, a homebred 3-year-old daughter of Jesse James Jr and champion Alice K White, will look to start a new win streak in the 400-yard, $85,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap (RG1) at Sunland Park on Sunday.

Trained by Jason Giles for owner Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico, Astica is coming off of a second-place finish to BL Corona in the November 25, 400-yard New Mexico Fillies & Mares Championship (RG1) at Zia Park. Prior to that, the filly assembled a six-race win streak that included three stakes victories.

Astica has this season earned $216,263 from six outs, and her five wins include a 1 1/2-length victory as the fastest qualifier and 3-5 favorite in the 400-yard, $162,000 Zia Derby (RG2) at Ruidoso Downs. Astica drew post 8 and will be ridden by Salvador Martinez.

BL Corona is one of Astica’s nine opponents in the Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap. A 4-year-old Southern Corona mare racing for Bertha S. Irigoyen from the barn of trainer Irving Fournier, BL Corona has won three of five races and has banked $129,352 this year. The mare will be ridden by Edgar Martinez from post 6.

Other contenders include Yaneth Cabrera’s Pretty Woody Jesse, a sorrel sophomore filly by Jesse James Jr trained by Ken Grisham. Pretty Woody Jesse is coming off of a third-place finish, three-quarters of a length behind BL Corona, in the New Mexico Fillies & Mares Championship.

Pretty Woody Jesse drew the rail post and will be ridden by Ivan Carnero.

The Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap is one of three Quarter Horse stakes scheduled for Sunland Park on Sunday. The 400-yard, $350,000 Championship at Sunland Park (G1) has drawn a full field of 10, including reigning AQHA world champion JRC Callas First and New Mexico-bred graded stakes winner Mad About The Moon.

Also on Sunday, an overflow field of 12 2-year-olds, topped by Grade 1 winner BV Midnite Express, has been entered in the inaugural running of the 400-yard, $250,000 Sunland Park Juvenile Championship.
