RSS Feeds Tuesday, May 10, 2016
Norberto Arroyo Jr. rode Atillas Gift to a one-length win in the 1-mile, $44,800 Jack Cole Stakes (R) for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park on Monday.

Trained by Todd Fincher for owners Scott Bryant and Joe Dee Brooks, Atillas Gift covered his eight-furlong trip in 1:37.86 while scoring his fifth win in 21 starts. The $26,880 winner’s share of the Jack Cole purse increased the 4-year-old chestnut gelding’s bankroll to $160,118.

Atillas Gift was acquired from breeder R.D. Hubbard for $27,000 at the 2013 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding’s sire, Attila’s Storm, is a 14-year-old Kentucky-bred son of the Storm Cat stallion Forest Wildcat.

Racing in five states, including New York and California, from 2004-07, Attila’s Storm earned $534,983 from 18 outs, and his five wins included a 1 1/4-length victory in the 6-furlong, $107,100 Toboggan Handicap (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack in 2007. The stallion’s 88 starters have earned more than $5.1 million, and his 13 black-type stakes winners include multiple stakes winners Thermal, Little Vidalia, Reaper, and Hush’s Storm.

Attila’s Storm entered stud in ’08. He is owned by R.D. Hubbard and stands for a $4,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.

Atillas Gift is one of nine winners from 10 starters foaled by Sentimental Gift, an unraced Kentucky-bred daughter of the Nijinsky II stallion Green Dancer. The gelding is a half brother to Alexine (ARG), a Runaway Groom filly who won the 1999 Grand Prix Internacional Copa de Plata (G1) in Argentina.

Atillas Gift’s second dam, the winning Luthier (FR) mare Amenity (FR), produced stakes winners I Try (IRE) and Idle Affair, both half siblings to Sentimental Gift. The gelding traces back to his third dam, the stakes-winning Wild Risk (FR) mare Almyre (FR). A 1964 foal, Almyre foaled multiple Group 2-winner Ashmore and Group 3 winners Acoma (FR) and Art Bleu (GB).

Atillas Gift has been campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, and his race record includes a half-length win at odds of 22-1 in last year’s 6-furlong, $60,000 Albuquerque Journal Stakes (R) for state-bred sophomores at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Sent to post at odds of 9-2, Atillas Gift returned an $11.60 win mutuel. D E Lover, the 19-10 favorite in the field of six, ran second to complete a $2 exacta dividend of $42.60.

Chasing Our Dreams, Rising Giant, Jacks Party, and Citizen Geller completed the order of finish.

D E Lover is a 5-year-old So Long Birdie gelding racing for Tony E. Sedillo and Leroy Martinez. D E Lover has won six of 24 starts, including two stakes, and the $9,856 runner-up share of the Jack Cole purse bumped his earnings to $225,252.

An 8-year-old son of the Montbrook stallion Source, Chasing Our Dreams is owned by A & A Equine Inc. and Jeff Plotkin. The gelding has won 11 of 65 outs and has banked $149,940.
