February 2, 2009 – A benefit dinner/dance and silent auction for injured or ill jockeys and trainers will be
held at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino on Tuesday, February 16.
The benefit will take place at the track’s Signature Showroom, starting at 6:30 p.m. (MST). Among those who will benefit are: trainer Robert Ritchie, who was seriously injured after being kicked by a horse; and jockeys Noe Garcia, who is paralyzed on one side and is in the hospital after receiving a routine flu shot; Vicki Warhol, who is suffering from lymphoma; David Essman, who is currently hospitalized with colitis; Carlos Rivas, who broke his back in an accident during a race and is in an intensive care unit in a local hospital; and Jorge Espitia, who fell during a racing accident and has had major facial reconstruction.
