Betternilook Is Prompt Choice in O.G. Fischer Memorial
RSS Feeds Sunday, June 27, 2010

Sent to post as the 4-5 favorite, Betternilook responded with a one-length win in Saturday’s $50,000 Dr. O.G. Fischer Memorial Handicap for fillies and mares at SunRay Park.

Betternilook is owned and trained by Jose A. Gonzalez, and the 7-year-old mare went 7-furlongs in 1:23.36 under jockey Alejandro Medellin while posting her first career stakes victory. A one-time $5,000 claimer, Betternilook earned $30,000 to increase his bankroll to $212,429.

Betternilook was bred in New Mexico by Joe Allen of Abilene, Texas, and the gelding became the 13th stakes winner from 110 starters sired by Desert God, an unraced 19-year-old son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Fappiano. To date, Desert God has sired 15 crops and the earners of more than $5.6 million, including Peppers Pride, the holder of the North American record of 19 consecutive wins. The stallion stands for a $6,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.

Betternilook is also one of three winners from as many starters foaled by Rio Babe, an unraced 19-year-old daughter of the Riverman stallion Bold River (FR). Her second dam, the winning Olden Times mare Brian’s Babe, ran second in first division of the Princess Doreen Stakes at Arlington Park near Chicago in 1981.

Brian’s Babe produced four winners from six starters, including Old Time Romance, a filly by Pancho Villa who ran second in the 1991 Vallejo Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. A 1978 foal, Brian’s Babe was a half sister to Dr. Neale, a colt by Herbager who won the 1972 Sunland Park Derby, and Continuing, a Vaguely Noble colt who ran third in the Grade 2, $150,000 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park in ’82.

Betternilook traces back to her fourth dam, the late Double Jay mare Continue. A winner of five of her seven starts, Continue produced five stakes winners, including Yamanin, a colt by Herbager who won the 1977 Widener Handicap (G1) at Hialeah Park in Florida, and Tuerta, a filly by Forli who won the ’73 Long Island Handicap (G3) on the turf at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York.

Betternilook has won 14 of 34 races, and she has won four of her five starts at the current SunRay Park meet. During the Sunland Derby undercard at Sunland Park on March 28, the mare ran third, 1 ½ lengths behind winner Happy Me, in the 5 ½-furlong, $125,000 La Coneja Handicap (R) for New Mexico-bred distaffers.

Orabell ran second and was followed by It’s A Promise, Bye Bye Ladies, Setustrait, and Value System.

Orabell is a 5-year-old daughter of Orientate racing for Richard Lueck of Northglenn, Colorado. The mare earned $11,000 for her runner-up effort in the O.G. Fischer to boost her bankroll to $91,350.

A 5-year-old Distorted Humor mare campaigned by Patrick L. Cugnini of Durango, Colorado, It’s A Promise banked $5,000 to run her earnings to $39,185. It’s A Promise was claimed by Cugnini for $15,000 at Turfway Park in Kentucky in 2008, and she won two consecutive races during last year’s Downs at Albuquerque meet.
