BF Sonic Boom is Fastest Sunland Winter Futurity Finalist
RSS Feeds Friday, December 10, 2010

BF Sonic Boom posted the fastest Sunland Park Winter Futurity (G2) qualifying time, as the southern New Mexico track opened its 77-day meet before an announced crowd of 3,609 on Friday.

Ridden by Freddie Martinez, BF Sonic Boom won the third of seven 400-yard trials by 1 ¼ lengths and covered the distance in :19.053. Paul Jones trains the homebred Okey Dokey Dale gelding for owners Birrel Farms and James and Dianna Lynn.

BF Sonic Boom’s victory was his fourth in nine starts and increased his earnings to $61,026. On August 22, the gelding ran second in the 400-yard, $143,215 Mile High Futurity (G3) at Arapahoe Park near Denver.

BF Sonic Boom is one of three winners from as many starters produced by Echo Boomer, a stakes-winning 10-year-old daughter of Corona Cartel. The gelding is a half brother to BF Test For Echo, a Check Him Out filly who ran second in an overnight stakes at Los Alamitos earlier this year.

The Sunland Park Winter Futurity was first run in 1964, and its past winners include world champions Easy Jet (1969) and Easy Date (’74).
