Big Spurs Tops Zia Futurity Qualifiers
RSS Feeds Saturday, July 16, 2016
Big Spurs, a gray son of freshman sire Big Daddy Cartel campaigned by Astorga Racing LLC, won the second of nine Zia Futurity (RG1) trials on Saturday, and the colt is the fastest qualifier to the $409,110 final for New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds on July 31.

Ridden by Ivan Carnero for trainer Ron Stephens, Big Spurs defeated sixth-fastest qualifier Scooters Debutant by 1 1/4 lengths in :19.866. The colt’s victory was his third in five outs and pushed his earnings to $75,619.

Big Spurs was bred by Hubaldo Solis of Peralta, New Mexico, and his resume includes a second-place finish in the April 24, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Second-fastest qualifier Running Dragon remained undefeated with a wire-to-wire, 2 1/2 length win in the sixth trial. Jose Ortiz rode the homebred daughter of Zulu Dragon for the By By JJ Limited Partnership and trainer Juan M. Gonzalez.

Running Dragon has won all five of her outs, including the New Mexican Spring Futurity and June 18, 350-yard Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs. The filly has banked $303,168.

Machismo Moon, a $20,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, posted the third-fastest qualifier with her nose victory in the ninth and final heat. Prepped by Seth Ferguson for the trainer’s first-ever win at Ruidoso Downs, the Heza Motor Scooter gelding was ridden by Bonifacio Perez for owners Ramon Alvarez, Joe Alvarez and Ysabel Medrano.
