RSS Feeds Thursday, December 08, 2011
Sunland Park will present three New Mexico-bred stakes – two for Thoroughbreds and one for Quarter Horses – during its racing programs this weekend.

The state-bred action gets underway with the 15th running of the Jess Burner Memorial Handicap (RG1) on Sunday. A 400-yard stakes with a purse of $110,000, this year's Jess Burner is headed by morning-line favorite Down With You.

A homebred 4-year-old stallion by The Down Side, Down With You has won four of 15 races and has earned $210,084 for his owners, R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard. Down With You is coming off of a neck victory in the 440-yard, $180,480 New Mexico Cup Quarter Horse Championship (RG1) at Zia Park on October 30.

Another prominent Jess Burner entry, Quatro Menudos, will be making his first start against older horses. The 3-year-old Furyofthewind gelding, who races for William McCarty, Paul Wood, and SW Paving & Grading Inc., Quatro Menudos has won six of seven races – including two New Mexico-bred graded stakes – and he has banked $276,404, most of which has been earned this season.

Two New Mexico-bred Thoroughbred stakes top Sunland Park's 11-race card on Sunday – the 6-furlong, $110,000 New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap (R) for fillies and mares, and the 6 1/2-furlong, $110,000 Johnie L. Jamison Handicap (R).

Rita J. Danley's I Am Lesters Gal, a homebred 4-year-old filly by Lesters Boy, is the 123-pound high weight for the New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap. I Am Lesters Gal is coming off of three consecutive allowance victories during the recently concluded Zia Park meet.

Another entry, Comicsperfectstorm, will be facing older distaffers for the first time in her career. The homebred bay daughter of Comic Genius has won six of seven races – including four stakes – and has earned $264,511 for her owner, Helen Nave of Hobbs.

The complete lineup for the New Mexico State Racing Commission Handicap, in post position order including jockey and weight assignments – Iplaytricks (Carlos Madeira, 119), Shamrock Girl (T.L. The Johnie L. Jamison Handicap has drawn a full field of 12, including 123-pound high weights Chuchuluco and Lesters Secret. Chuchuluco's seven wins in 17 outs include last year's Johnie L. Jamison Handicap.

Lesters Secret ran second, a neck behind Chuchuluco, in the New Mexico Cup Sprint. The 5-year-old Lesters Boy gelding, campaigned by the Solitaire Stable and Simply The Best Thoroughbreds, won the July 4, $50,000 Sierra Blanca Handicap (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
