RSS Feeds Saturday, July 14, 2012

Caliente Colt won the last of four Zia Derby (RG3) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Saturday and posted the fastest qualifying time for the $140,142 final on July 29.

Racing for J. Patricia Gonzalez and Susan Kirker and trained by Juan M. Gonzalez, Caliente Colt defeated second-fastest qualifier Gotta Get Two by three-quarters of a length while covering 400 yards in :19.730 under jockey Jaime Leos. The sorrel gelding by the First Down Dash stallion Corona Caliente posted his fifth win in six starts and pushed his earnings to $71,670, of which $60,510 has been banked this season.

Caliente Colt broke his maiden against $25,000 maiden claimers in his career debut on November 27 at Zia Park. He subsequently won two allowance races during the 2011-12 Sunland Park meet, including a 400-yard, $37,000 non-winners-of-three sprint against New Mexico-breds on April 17.

On Friday, Caliente Colt's half sister, Runin Sixes, recorded the fourth-fastest qualifier to the July 29, $395,028 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso.

Gotta Get Two is a gelding by the Dash For Cash stallion Celadon owned by Berry S. Cox and trained by Fred Danley. A full brother to 2006 AQHA champion aged gelding Gotta Get, Gotta Get Two has earned $30,362 from nine outs, and he was a finalist in last year's 400-yard, $330,643 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park.
