Zia Park’s final weekend of live racing will feature four stakes, three for Thoroughbreds and one for Quarter Horses.
Three of Zia Park’s final stakes – the 440-yard, $150,000 Zia Park Quarter Horse Championship (G1), the 1-mile, $120,000 New Mexico Eddy County Stakes (R) for state-bred 2-year-olds, and the 1 1/8-mile, $200,000 Zia Park Distance Championship – will be run as part of an 11-race card on Sunday. The other stakes, the 1 1/16-mile, $150,000 Zia Park Derby, is scheduled as the 10th race of an 11-race program on Saturday.
The Zia Park Derby has attracted a field of nine 3-year-olds, including New Mexico-bred Spinning Touch. A homebred colt by Touchdown Ky racing for Michael and Jeanne Fuhs and John Kozelski, Spinning Touch has won two races this year, including the $40,000-added New Mexico State Fair Breeders’ Derby (R) at The Downs at Albuquerque on September 26.
Morning-line favorite Stachys is coming off of a third-place finish in the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park on October 10. Racing for Al Ulwelling and Bill Ulwelling from the barn of Michael Biehler, Stachys campaigned at Canterbury Park in Minnesota last summer, where the bay gelding by Candy Ride won the 1 mile, $35,000 Dean Kutz Stakes on the turf. He also won the August 2, $75,000 Manitoba Derby at Assinboia Downs in Winnipeg.
All horses in the Zia Park Derby will tote 122 pounds. The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds – Saratoga Yankee (Luis Quinonez), 7-2; Raven Hawk (Ken Tohill), 9-2; Spinning Touch (J.
