Cobrita Is Fastest West Texas Derby Finalist
RSS Feeds Saturday, March 19, 2011

Oscar Salcito Gortarez's Cobrita is the fastest qualifier for the $65,000-added West Texas Derby (G3) at Sunland Park on April 2.

On Friday, Cobrita won the third of five trials by two lengths as the 9-5 favorite, as the brown daughter of Agouti went 400 yards in :19.256 under jockey Vicente Grajeda. Cobrita's victory was her second win in 13 starts, and the $6,000 winner's share of the trial purse pushed her earnings to $25,626.

Cobrita was bred in Arizona by Gortarez, who also trains the filly. Cobrita was a finalist in last year's Grade 2, 400-yard Sunland Park Winter Futurity and the 300-yard Desert Classic Futurity (RG3) at Turf Paradise.

Second-fastest qualifier Fredona won the first trial by a nose from third-fastest qualifier Choose. A chestnut filly by Corona Cartel racing for Valle Guadiana Corp. and trained by Juan M. Gonzalez, Fredona was making her first start since June 13, when she ran ninth in the Ruidoso Futurity (G1) at Ruidoso Downs.
