Racing for T Bill Stables Inc., Cold Cash 123 covered 440 yards in :21.269, a clocking that was 284/1000ths of a second faster than Mr Piloto’s winning All American Futurity time of :21.553 later in the day. Jose Montoya rode the homebred bay gelding by Oak Tree Special for trainer C. Dwayne “Sleepy” Gilbreath.
Cold Cash 123 returned a $29.40 win mutuel and teamed with runner-up The Printing Press, a 23-1 longshot, for a $2 exacta payoff of $967.80. Pump It Teller finished third at odds of 17-1 and completed a $2 trifecta of $3,129.80.
A Michigan-bred, Cold Cash 123 became the 14th stakes winners sired by Oak Tree Special, the AQHA world champion in 2003 and a half brother to 1996 Sunland Park Fall Futurity (G2) runner-up Ryons Easy Oak. Now 10, Oak Tree Special has sired the earners of more than $2.8 million from four crops, and his 170 starters include his top earner, ’07 Speedhorse Gold & Silver Cup Futurity (RG1) winner Furrtreeous. He stands for a $5,000 fee at Robicheaux Ranch in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana.
Cold Cash 123 is the first starter foaled by the 8-year-old Takin On The Cash mare Hot Cash 123. The gelding’s second dam, To Hot To Hug, is a daughter of Six Fols who ran third in the 1988 Michigan Derby at Mt. Pleasant Meadows.
A 1985 Michigan-bred foal, To Hot To Hug has produced nine winners from 12 starters, including Hot Hugger, a gelding by Striking Bunny who won the $29,699 Michigan Bred Futurity (RG3) in ’93, and the stakes-winning Striking Bunny gelding Overpowered. To Hot To Hug’s runners also include Shesa Lady 123, a Separatist filly who ran third in the 2008 Hobbs America Futurity (G2) at Zia Park.
Cold Cash 123 traces back to his third dam, the stakes-winning Tiny’s Gay mare Tiny Lou Etta, who produced 2005 All American Congress Derby (G3) winner Fanci Ending 123. Tiny Lou Etta’s half sister, the Striking Bunny filly Very Striking, won the 1994 GLQHA Stallion Service Sale Futurity (RG3) at Mt. Pleasant Meadows.
Cold Cash 123 has won two of four races and has earned $45,394. The gelding was coming off of a head victory under Jacky Martin in the first of 20 All American Futurity trials on August 19.
Grade 1 winner Hes Too Icy For Me, the 7-10 favorite, ran fourth, and was followed by First Class Lacy B and Caitlyn Rose and Fast Red Rose, who finished in a dead heat for sixth. Goose Perry ran last in the field of eight.
Runner-up The Printing Press banked $27,088 to push his earnings to $28,608 for owner Joe M. Flores. A gelding by the late Feature Mr Jess, The Printing Press is winless in five starts at Louisiana Downs, Sam Houston Race Park, and Ruidoso Downs.
Pump It Up Teller is a bay daughter of champion and 2005 All American Futurity winner Teller Cartel racing for Stephen Williams and Jeff Jones. The filly has banked $25,736 from one win in five outs.
