Copper Top Futurity Trials Draw 16 Juveniles
RSS Feeds Saturday, April 16, 2016
A total of 16 New Mexico-bred 2-year-olds, including recent winner Cawboybandido, has been entered in Sunday’s 4 1/2-furlong Copper Top Futurity (R) trials at Sunland Park.

Eight juveniles have been entered in two heats. Cawboybandido is a homebred son of the multiple stakes winning Time Bandit stallion Next Bandit trained by Miguel Castillo for owner Hubaldo Solis of Peralta, New Mexico. The colt made his debut with a wire-to-wire, two-length victory in a 2-furlong maiden special weight race for state-breds on March 22.

Cawboybandido drew post 6 and will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin in the second trial. His seven opponents include Happy Hennessy, a gelded son of Roll Hennessy Roll owned and trained by Fred Danley. Happy Hennessy is a half brother to multiple stakes winners Happy Me and I Am Lesters Gal.

Happy Hennessy will be ridden by Luis Ramon Rodriguez from post 5 in the gelding’s career debut.

Danley will saddle two juveniles in the first trial, both of whom will be making their first lifetime starts. One of his starters, Up To Squall, is a gelded son of Squall and a full brother to Miss B R H, the winner of the fillies’ division of the 2014 Copper Top Futurity, and Naevussquall, the winner of the colts’ and geldings’ division of last year’s Copper Top.

Steve Prather’s Ignored, a homebred chestnut son of The Way Home trained by Todd Fincher, will be ridden by Ruby Gonzalez from post 7 as the morning-line favorite in the first heat. Ignored is a full brother to My Homey, a multiple stakes winner during his 2-year-old season in 2011, and he is a half to Quinton’s Place, the winner of the 2009 Totah Stakes (R) for 2-year-olds at SunRay Park.

The top five finishers in each trial will meet in the $110,000-added Copper Top Futurity final on May 3.
