Copper Top Futurity Trials Set for Saturday
RSS Feeds Wednesday, March 22, 2017
S and G Racing LLC’s Big Boom, a bay son of Roll Hennessy Roll and a recent maiden winner over the track, is one of 26 New Mexico-bred juveniles entered in Saturday’s 4 1/2-furlong Copper Top Futurity (R) trials at Sunland Park.

An $8,000 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Big Boom made his career debut with a 3 1/2-length victory in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden-special-weight dash for state-breds on March 4. The gelding is the first starter produced by Be Quiet Lady, a winning 8-year-old daughter of the Fappiano stallion Quiet American.

Big Boom drew post 2 and will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin in the first of three trials. His eight opponents in the first heat include Happy Resources, a homebred son of the stakes-winning Distorted Humor stallion Infinite Resource owned and trained by Fred Danley. Happy Resources is the first starter produced by his dam, Happy Me, a daughter of Lesters Boy who won three New Mexico-bred stakes from 2009-10.

Happy Resources drew the rail post and will be ridden by Alfredo Sigala.

Nine 2-year-olds have been entered in the second Copper Top trial, topped by On The Low Down, a $43,000 yearling purchase who will be making his career debut for owners Dale Taylor, Bobby McQueen, and Suzanne Kirby. A chestnut gelding by Dome trained by Todd Fincher, On The Low Down is out of Speedin Excess, a daughter of In Excess (IRE) who ran second in the $122,050 Barretts Debutante Stakes (R) during the 2008 Los Angeles County Fair meet at Fairplex Park.

On The Low Down drew post 4 and will be ridden by Tracy Hebert.

The third trial has drawn eight entries, including Infinite Gal, a homebred daughter of Infinite Resource owned and trained by Fred Danley. Infinite Gal is the first starter foaled by I Am Lesters Gal, a 10-year-old mare by Lesters Boy who won two New Mexico-bred stakes from 2010-12, including the 2012 Russell and Helen Foutz Distaff Handicap (R) at SunRay Park.

Infinite Gal drew post 8 and will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin.

The 10 qualifiers from Saturday’s Copper Top Futurity trials will meet in the $150,000-est. final on April 16.
