Coronas Boy Voted AQHA Champion Distance Horse

Victor M. Diaz’s Coronas Boy, a registered New Mexico-bred 8-year-old gelding by the Dash For Cash stallion Mr Houston, is the 2016 American Quarter Horse Association champion distance horse.

During his 7-year-old season, Coronas Boy earned $133,100 from five starts, and his three wins included the 870-yard, $50,000 Herman Jefferson Stakes on October 2, and the 870-yard, $140,000 New Mexico Cup 870 Championship (R) on October 30, both at Zia Park.

All told, Coronas Boy has won 10 of 35 starts -- including five stakes -- and he has banked $519,862. The homebred gelding’s trainer during his championship campaign was Martin Orona Jr.

A total of 131 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses has been entered in Sunday’s New Mexico Cup races at Zia Park. Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
