D E Lover, Citizen Geller Square Off in Casey Darnell Stakes
RSS Feeds Friday, September 16, 2016
D E Lover, the top Thoroughbred during the recently concluded Ruidoso Downs summer season, is one of six New Mexico-bred sprinters entered in Saturday’s 5 1/2-furlong, $60,000 Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes at Albuquerque Downs.

D E Lover is a 5-year-old So Long Birdie gelding racing for Leroy Martinez and trainer Tony Sedillo. D E Lover has won his last three starts -- all at Ruidoso Downs -- including the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Sierra Blanca Handicap (R) on July 31, and the 6-furlong, $50,000 Ruidoso Downs Thoroughbred Championship (R) on September 5.

The 2-1 morning-line favorite, D E Lover drew post 6 and will be ridden by J. Martin Bourdieu. Other contenders include Citizen Geller, a homebred 4-year-old son of Pro Prado trained by Vance Mikkelson for Larry and Denise Nichols’ UKUSA Stables of El Paso, Texas.

Citizen Geller has banked $105,238 this season, and his two wins include a one-length victory at odds of 20-1 in the 7-furlong, $60,000 O.D. McDonald Handicap (R) at Albuquerque Downs on June 25. The gelding drew post 5 and will be ridden by Alfredo Sigala.

Weappear, a 4-year-old Devon Lane gelding owned by Ruth Summers of Albuquerque, drew the rail post and will be ridden by Roimes Chirinos for trainer Nancy Summers. Weappear is coming off of a one-length win in a 5-furlong allowance-optional claimer at Albuquerque on August 24.

The Casey Darnell Pony Express Stakes honors the memory of the late Clarence “Casey” Darnell, a longtime New Mexico horseman who died in 2001. Working from his Alamo Farm near Corrales, the versatile trainer prepped the winners of 500 Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse races, and he also trained performance horses in multiple events. Darnell was inducted in the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in ’09.

The complete lineup, in post position order including jockey and weight assignments and morning-line odds -- Weappear (Roimes Chirinos, 123), 3-1; Storm Of Roses (Erick Lopez, 117), 10-1; Not My Note (Glen Murphy, 120), 7-2; Joker’s Touch (Elvin Gonzalez, 120), 6-1; Citizen Geller (Alfredo Sigala, 123), 4-1; and D E Lover (J. Martin Bourdieu, 123), 2-1.
