RSS Feeds Monday, September 4, 2017
D E Lover, a 6-year-old So Long Birdie gelding owned by Leroy Martinez and trainer Tony Sedillo, is one of nine New Mexico-breds entered in Monday’s 6-furlong, $50,000 Ruidoso Downs Thoroughbred Championship (R) at Ruidoso Downs.

D E Lover will be stretching out in distance off of his one-length victory in the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Sierra Blanca Handicap (R) at Ruidoso on July 30. The gelding has won 12 of 36 starts -- including eight of 13 at Ruidoso Downs -- and he has earned $451,422.

The 5-2 morning-line favorite, D E Lover drew post 7 and will be ridden by J. Martin Bourdieu.

Stormin The Jewels, the runner-up to D E Lover in the Sierra Blanca, drew post 8 and will be ridden by Enrique Gomez. Trained by Fred Danley for owner J & SM Inc. of Fort Stockton, Texas, the 4-year-old multiple stakes winning Attila’s Storm gelding has banked $365,271 from 14 outs, all in New Mexico, and his season resume includes a second-place finish, 2 1/2 lengths behind winner Citizen Geller, in the 7-furlong, $70,000 O.D. McDonald Stakes (R) at Albuquerque Downs on June 24.

Other contenders include Mr. Mooch, a 3-year-old son of Tin Can Sailor who will be facing older runners for owners Rodney Brooks, Marty Brooks, Glenn Berry, and Donnie Reid. Trained by Johnathan Lemons, the gelding is coming off of a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for 3-year-old New Mexico-breds on July 30.

Mr. Mooch was claimed by his current connections for $7,500 on April 1, and he has since won two of his four outs. The gelding drew post 2 and will be ridden by J.C. Villanueva.
