Diabolical Dame Wins Bold Ego Handicap
RSS Feeds Sunday, January 1, 2017
Facing open stakes company for the third time in her career, Diabolical Dame rallied to win Sunday’s $65,000 Bold Ego Handicap for fillies and mares at Sunland Park.

Diabolical Dame covered 5 1/2 furlongs on a sealed track labeled “slow,” and the 5-year-old gray or roan mare’s margin of victory was one length from registered New Mexico-bred Bryn’s Fancy Pants. Todd Fincher prepped and Tracy Hebert rode Diabolical Dame for owners Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, and Derrol Hubbard.

A $25,000 yearling purchase at the 2013 New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, Diabolical Dame has earned $496,980. The mare is one of eight stakes winners from four crops sired by Diabolical, a 14-year-old son of the Marquetry stallion Artax and a half brother to What A Name, a two-time Group 3 stakes winner in France from 2012-13.

Diabolical banked $1,404,772 from 32 starts while racing from 2005-09, and his nine wins included the 6-furlong, $260,000 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G2) at Saratoga in ’07. The stallion has sired the earners of more than $4.5 million from 101 starters, including multiple stakes winner That’s The Idea and stakes winners Liberty Lover, Muy Rapido, and Mays Or Mantle.

Diabolical is owned by Fred Alexander and J. Kirk Robison, and he stood the 2016 season for a $6,000 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander’s A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.

Diabolical Dame is also one of four starters produced by Vipervapor, a 14-year-old mare by the late Devon Lane who won the 2003 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs. The filly’s third dam, the winning New Policy mare Aveshur, was a full sister to Sharm A Sheikh, a New Policy filly who won the ’74 California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes (R) at Del Mar and ran second in that season’s Arlington-Washington Lassie Futurity (G3) at Arlington Park near Chicago.

Diabolical Dame traces back to her fourth dam, April Dawn. A Kentucky-bred daughter of Gallant Man and a 1963 foal, April Dawn won three stakes in Southern California from 1966-67.

Raced in New Mexico and California, Diabolical Dame has won 12 of 20 starts, including seven stakes, and her two wins against open stakes company include a 2 3/4-length victory in the 6 1/2-furlong, $55,000 Casino at The Downs Stakes at Albuquerque Downs in 2015.

Tilla Cat finished third, 1 3/4 lengths behind Diabolical Dame, and was followed by Laugh It Up, Seams Discreet, Bright Town, and Protective Shield.

Bryn’s Fancy Pants is a homebred 4-year-old daughter of Southwestern Heat racing for Dale Taylor, Carey Taylor, and Jon Hogg. The filly has won six of eight outs, including four stakes, and the $14,300 runner-up share of the Bold Ego purse pushed her bankroll to $220,200.

Tilla Cat completed the one-two-three sweep for registered New Mexico-breds, as the 4-year-old Attila’s Storm filly earned $6,500 for her third-place finish. Campaigned by Dale Taylor, Lee Lewis, Joe Dee Brooks, Scott Bryant, and Derrol Hubbard, Tilla Cat has won four of 16 races, including last year’s 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Oaks (R) at Zia Park, and she has banked $217,399.
