Dominguez, Eikleberry Have Big Zia Festival Weekend at Ruidoso
RSS Feeds Sunday, July 27, 2014

Trainer Henry Dominguez and jockey Ry Eikleberry teamed to win three of the seven Thoroughbred stakes during this year’s Zia Festival races, held Saturday and Sunday at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack.

All three of the races won by the jockey-trainer combination were homebreds owned by J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas. On Saturday, Dominguez and Eikleberry won the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Sierra Starlet Handicap (R) for 3-year-old fillies with That’s The Idea. The pair followed that up on Sunday, winning the 5 1/2-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for 3-year-old colts and geldings with Mays Or Mantle, and the 6-furlong, $50,000 Lincoln Handicap (R) for fillies and mares with Lakehouse Fun.

A regular at Sunland Park Racetrack in the winter and Zia Park in the fall, Eikleberry traveled to Ruidoso from Canterbury Park in Minnesota, where he currently ranks second in that track's Thoroughbred jockey standings.

Trainer Todd Fincher also had a successful weekend, as he won both of the Zia Festival weekend’s richest Thoroughbred races -- Saturday’s 5 1/2-furlong, $198,975 Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) with Twixy Roll, and Sunday’s 5 1/2-furlong, $154,381 Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) with Lux.

The weekend’s richest race for any breed, the 400-yard, $392,253 Zia Futurity (RG1) for 2-year-olds on Sunday, was won by the only filly in the 10 horse field, Girlonthego. A $20,000 purchase at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale, Girlonthego earned $164,746 for her owners, Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vasquez. Jaime Parga Leos rode the Man On The Move filly for trainer Juan M. Gonzalez, who has won the last three runnings of the Zia Futurity.

A recap of all 11 Zia Festival stakes appears below. All also-rans are listed in order of finish. Complete coverage of the weekend will be featured in the October issue of the New Mexico Horse Breeder magazine.
