Dominyun Breaks Maiden in John Deere NM Juvenile Challenge Trials
RSS Feeds Friday, July 23, 2010

Dominyun, a homebred Mr Jess Perry colt racing for Bobby D. Cox, won the fourth of seven John Deere New Mexico Juvenile Challenge (G3) trials at Ruidoso Downs on Thursday, posting the fastest qualifying time for the August 7 final.

Prepped by John Buchanan and ridden by Russel Hadley, Dominyun defeated 11-10 favorite and second-fastest qualifier Feature Honor by a neck while going 350 yards on a sloppy and sealed track in :17.280. The victory was the colt’s first in two outs.

Dominyun is one of 557 winners from 817 starters sired by champion Mr Jess Perry, an 18-year-old son of Streakin La Jolla whose 12 crops have earned more than $31.1 million. The colt is also one of nine winners from 10 starters produced by the winning and stakes-placed Runaway Winner mare Runaway Dee Dee.

Dominyun’s half brother, the First Down Dash gelding A Down Right Runaway, won four stakes from 2003-04, including the ’03 All American Congress Futurity (G3) at Beulah Park near Columbus, Ohio. Another half brother, the Invisible Injun gelding Riddick, won the 2007 Ben E. Keith Stakes (R) for Texas-breds at Retama Park and was a finalist in the ’06 Texas Classic Futurity (G1) at Lone Star Park.

Feature Honor was making his first start in the U.S. Racing for Carmina LLC, the bay colt by the late Feature Mr Jess won the 300-yard Prize Classic Stakes at the Hipodromo de las Americas.

The winner of the $62,210 final will earn a berth in the November 19, $150,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship (G2) at Fair Grounds Racecourse in New Orleans.
