Casey Lambert rode longshot Double Smart to a three-length victory in Saturday's $110,000 Jack Cole Handicap (R) for New Mexico-breds at SunRay Park.
Saddled by H. Ray Ashford for owners Roger K. Beasley and Leach Racing, Double Smart went one mile in 1:36.90 in front of a Kentucky Derby-day crowd announced at 6,001. The homebred 5-year-old gelding was sent to post at odds of 8-1 and returned a $19.40 win mutuel.
Double Smart is one of four stakes winners sired by Premeditation, a 12-year-old Grade 3-placed son of Afternoon Deelites who won the $100,000 Alysheba Breeders' Cup Stakes at Lone Star Park in 2002. A half brother to Grade 3 winner Real Dandy, Premeditation has sired 15 winners from 26 starters and the earners of more than $1.3 million.
In 2007, Premeditation was named the New Mexico freshman sire of the year. The Kentucky-bred stallion is owned by William L. Clifton Jr. and stands for a $2,500 fee at Fred and Linda Alexander's A & A Ranch at Anthony, New Mexico.
Double Smart's dam, the 13-year-old Beau Genius mare Miss Einstein, won the 2000 Kachina Stakes at Ruidoso Downs. The gelding traces back to his fifth dam, the stakes-winning Gallant Man mare Spicy Living.
All told, Double Smart has won six of 27 starts, and the $66,000 winner's share of the Jack Cole Handicap purse increased his earnings to $310,799. The gelding scored a nose victory at odds of nearly 18-1 in last year's one-mile, $180,000 Rocky Gulch New Mexico Cup Championship (R) at Zia Park.
Runner-up Brother Louie, a 27-1 longshot, ran second to complete a $2 exacta payoff of $770.80. Brother John D, Chuchuluco, Desert Gamble, 2-1 favorite La Sorpresa, Spinning Touch, Silver Matthias, Lefty Who, and Booger Boo completed the order of finish.
Brother Louie is a 4-year-old gelding by the winning Green Dancer stallion Emerald Jig racing for Lisa Dominguez and Carlos Gutierrez and trained by Henry Dominguez. A $20,000 claim at Del Mar in July 2010, Brother Louie has earned $115,184 from three wins in 22 outs, and his stakes resume includes a sixth-place finish in the March 20, $120,000 New Mexico State University Handicap (R) at Sunland Park.
Brother John D. outran his 53-1 odds to finish third, 3 ¼ lengths behind Double Smart. The chestnut 5-year-old gelding by the unraced Mia's Boy stallion Sable's Boy is campaigned by Peggy Rust from the barn of John D. Martinez, and he has banked $75,698 from 19 races. Brother John D. ran second in last year's 7-furlong, $40,000 E.T. Springer Stakes (R) and 1 1/16-mile, $40,000 Lineage Stakes (R) at The Downs at Albuquerque.
