Downs at Albuquerque Meet Opens Friday

The Downs at Albuquerque opens its 54-day season with a 10-race card on Friday. Post time for the first race will be 2:30 p.m. (MDT).

Located at the Expo New Mexico fairgrounds in central Albuquerque, The Downs at Albuquerque will present live racing primarily four days a week on a Wednesday and Friday-through-Sunday schedule. The meet includes a 17-day season from September 7-29 during the New Mexico State Fair.

The Downs' stakes schedule is headed by Lineage Day, August 26. On this day, the track will present 11 races for New Mexico-breds – six for Thoroughbreds and five for Quarter Horses. Other highlights of the 34-race, $1.25-million schedule include the 400-yard, $75,000-est. New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings and 400-yard, $75,000-est. New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies on September 22, and the 400-yard, $75,000-est. New Mexico State Fair Breeders' Derby (RG3) for state-bred 3-year-olds on September 23.

The Downs' Thoroughbred stakes schedule includes 10 official blacktype stakes for New Mexico-breds, topped by the 6-furlong, $75,000-est. Dessie & Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies and 6-furlong, $75,000-est. George Maloof Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings on September 23; and the 1-mile, $50,000 University of New Mexico Handicap (R) for 3-year-olds and older on October 7.

Also, the inaugural running of the $60,000-est. Zoom Zoom Zoom Shootout Stakes is scheduled for Sunday, September 30. The entry fee for the 250-yard dash will be $5,000, and 80 percent of the gross purse will be distributed to the winner. Racing secretary Jim Collins expect the Zoom Zoom Zoom to attract entries from throughout the country.

Post time for the first race during The Downs at Albuquerque meet will be 2:30 p.m. on weekdays, and 1:30 on Saturdays and Sundays. During the meet, construction on will be taking place on the track's new casino south of the racetrack, which is scheduled to be completed by early 2013.

The New Mexico Filly and Mare Championship is one of two state-bred stakes and eight stakes scheduled for Wednesday’s third annual “Land of Enchantment” Day program at Zia Park.
