Downs at Albuquerque Releases 2011 Stakes Schedule

The Downs at Albuquerque has released its stakes schedule for its 54-day meet that opens on Saturday, August 13.

Located at the New Mexico State Fairgrounds, Expo New Mexico, the Downs at Albuquerque will run 34 stakes worth more than $1.3 million in purses. As in recent years, the highlight of the track's stakes schedule will be Lineage Day on August 21, during which 11 stakes for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses will be run. Purses for Lineage Day will total nearly $500,000.

The Downs at Albuquerque meet includes a 17-day New Mexico State Fair meet in September. Stakes highlights during the State Fair portion include the 400-yard, the $50,000-added New Mexico State Fair Senor Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings and 400-yard, $50,000-added New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies on September 24, and the 6-furlong, $50,000-added Dessie & Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-old fillies and 6-furlong, $50,000-added George Maloof Futurity (R) for state-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings on September 25.

New to the Downs at Albuquerque stakes schedule is the 220-yard, $100,000-est. Zoom Zoom Zoom Shootout Stakes on October 2. The race, which pays 80 percent of the gross purse to the winner, is expected to draw entries from throughout the country.
