ES Dove is Fastest New Mexico Cup Futurity Qualifier
RSS Feeds Saturday, October 13, 2012

ES Dove, a homebred gelding by Jesse James Jr racing for Shirley Burelsmith, on Saturday won the last of seven New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) trials and posted the fastest qualifying time for the $140,000-added final at Zia Park on October 28.

Saddled by Emmitt Burelsmith and ridden by Salvador Martinez, ES Dove covered 400 yards in :19.885 against a 15-mph head wind, and his winning margin was a half of a length from odds-on favorite and fourth-fastest qualifier The Four Js. The gelding's victory was his second in four starts, and it increased his earnings to $19.291.

ES Dove was making his first start since July 29, when he finished eighth in the 400-yard, $395,028 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Second-fastest qualifier Gonna Cha Cha was a prompt 2-5 favorite in the fourth trial, as the gelding by Gonna Ro Sham Bo defeated third-fastest qualifier Jess A Satin Chicks by a neck while going 400 yards in :19.911 against a 20-mph head wind. Gonna Cha Cha has won five of six starts – including two stakes – and has banked $201,512 for his owners, Norma Alvarez, Brenda Alvarez, and Debra Laney.
