Facil Catana Wins Frontier Trophy Buckles Allowance Stakes
RSS Feeds Sunday, July 04, 2010

Facil Catana, a Florida-bred filly racing for Lathrop G. Hoffman of Sierra Madre, California, earned her first career stakes win in Sunday’s 6 ½-furlong, $50,000 Frontier Trophy Buckles Allowance Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at SunRay Park.

Prepped by Henry Dominguez and ridden for the first time by Catalino Martinez, Facil Catana led at every call en route to a 2 ¾-length victory over 6-5 favorite Tornado Betty. The filly by Untuttable set fractions of :22.42 and :44.83 before she stopped the timer in 1:16.59.

Facil Catana was a $35,000 buy at last year’s Ocala Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training. The filly was bred by Gilbert G. Campbell, and she became the eighth stakes winner from 142 starters sired by Untuttable, a winning 14-year-old son of 1990 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Unbridled and a half brother to the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Kris S. filly Queen Tutta.

Bred in Virginia by Edward P. Evans, Untuttable has sired the earners of more than $5.9 million from seven crops. His top earner, This Ones For Phil, is a 4-year-old gelding who won the 2009 Swale Stakes (G2) and this year’s 6-furlong, $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint Stakes (R) at Gulfstream Park. Untuttable stands for a $2,500 fee at Stonehedge Farm South near Williston, Florida.

Facil Catana’s dam, the winning 11-year-old Hennessy mare Brad’s Sweet Girl, has produced three winners from as many starters, including Soberano, a full brother to Facil Catana who ran third in two stakes in Puerto Rico last year.

Facil Catana’s third dam, the Majestic Prince mare Lovin Touch, won two stakes in 1983, including the second division of the listed $67,387 Selene Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse near Toronto, and she ran second in that season’s Black Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico Racecourse in Maryland. A 1980 foal, Lovin Touch produced two stakes winners, including Caressing, a filly by Honour And Glory who won the 2000 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes (G1) at Churchill Downs and was that season’s champion 2-year-old filly.

The $30,000 winner’s share of the purse pushed Facil Catana’s earnings to $84,490. A winner of four of eight races while racing exclusively in New Mexico, the filly was coming off of a two-length victory as the 2-5 choice in a 4 ½-furlong allowance sprint at SunRay Park on April 25. Her stakes resume includes a third-place finish in the February 28, one-mile Island Fashion Stakes at Sunland Park.

The only New Mexico-bred in the field of six, I Am Lesters Gal ran third, 4 ½ lengths behind Facil Catana.  Sweep The Road, Ringing Bernie, and Myrosapozzi completed the order of finish.

Runner-up Tornado Betty earned $11,000 for her owner, the Tempe, Arizona-based Stable HMA. A dark bay or brown daughter of Comic Strip, Tornado Betty was claimed by her current connections for $12,500 at Golden Gate Fields on October 22, and she has won two stakes this year, including the 6-furlong, $60,000 Goldfinch Stakes at Prairie Meadows near Des Moines, Iowa.

I Am Lesters Gal, a homebred daughter of Lesters Boy racing for Rita Danley of Anthony, New Mexico, banked $6,300 to run her career earnings to $39,352. The filly ran third in against state-breds last year’s Rio Grande Senorita Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs.
