Facil Catana, the 2-1 favorite, led at every call en route to a convincing 5 ¾-length win in Sunday’s $50,000 Bold Ego Handicap for fillies and mares at Sunland Park.
Ridden by Enrique Gomez for owner Lathrop G. Hoffman and trainer Henry Dominguez, Facil Catana covered 5 ½-furlongs in 1:03.23 after setting early fractions of :21.35 and :43.85. The 3-year-old daughter of Untuttable returned a $6.20 win mutuel while scoring her seventh victory in 12 races.
Facil Catana was bred in Florida by Gilbert G. Campbell, and the filly is one of eight stakes winners from 143 starters sired by Untuttable, a winning 14-year-old son of the Fappiano stallion Unbridled. A half brother to stakes winner Queen Tutta, Untuttable has sired the earners of more than $6.3 million from seven crops. He stands for a $2,500 fee at Stonehedge Farm South at Williston, Florida.
One of three winners from as many starters produced by the winning 11-year-old Hennessy mare Brad’s Sweet Girl, Facil Catana is a full sister to Soberano, a 4-year-old gelding who ran third in two stakes last year at Camarero Racecourse in Puerto Rico. The filly’s third dam, the Majestic Prince mare Lovin Touch, won two stakes in Canada and Pennsylvania in ’83 and ran second in that year’s $116,000 Black Eyed Susan Stakes (G2) at Pimlico Racecourse in Maryland.
Lovin Touch has foaled two stakes winners, including 2000 champion 2-year-old filly and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes (G1) winner Caressing.
Facil Catana has won five of her last six and six of her last eight races, and her stakes resume includes a victory in the 6-furlong, $50,000 Frontier Trophy Buckles Allowance Stakes at SunRay Park on the Fourth of July. She also scored a 5 ½-length win in the 6 ½-furlong Fair Queen Handicap during the New Mexico State Fair portion of The Downs at Albuquerque meet on September 18.
A $35,000 purchase at the 2009 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company Spring 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Facil Catana has earned $154,234.
Petition The Lady ran second and was followed by Linnea, Miss Heather Lee, Selective, Songtress, and Fauzeta.
A 5-year-old chestnut daughter of Petionville, Petition The Lady earned $11,000 to push her bankroll to $164,984 for her owner, SMS Racing LLC. Petition The Lady ran second, a neck behind winner Hayleys Halo, in the November 27, 6-furlong Zia Park Distaff Stakes, and last year the mare put together a four-race win streak that included the 7 ½-furlong, $50,000 Fern Sawyer Handicap at Ruidoso Downs.
Linnea is a 4-year-old filly by Candy Ride (ARG) racing for Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC, which claimed her for $20,000 at Sunland Park on January 17. All told, Linnea has earned $188,045 from eight wins in 24 outs while being campaigned at nine tracks in five different states.
