S. Diana Bringhurst's La Luz is one of 12 New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies who qualified to this year's 6-furlong, $50,000-added Dessie & Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) at the Downs at Albuquerque.
Ridden by Brian Theriot for trainer J. Owen Bringhurst, La Luz ran second behind La La La Dandy as the 2-5 favorite in the first of two trials on Saturday. The filly by the Old Trieste stallion Minister Eric was coming off a third-place finish in the 4 1/2-furlong, $75,000 C.O. “Ken” Kendrick Memorial Stakes (R) at SunRay Park on June 16.
La La La La Dandy, a homebred daughter of Real Dandy racing for Rita J. Danley of Anthony, New Mexico, has won two of six races and has banked $14,067. The filly's margin of victory was 2 ¼ lengths from La Luz, as she covered her 6-furlong trip in 1:12.53.
Miguel Gallegos' Morning Snickers made her debut with a 2 3/4-length victory in the second trial. The homebred filly is a chestnut daughter of the Carson City stallion Valet Man. Her half brother, Irish Dreamer, won the 2007 Dixieland Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
