Fincher, Hebert Score Big on New Mexico Cup Day

Trainer Todd Fincher and jockey Tracy Hebert each won four races during Zia Park Racetrack’s $2-million New Mexico Cup Day program for state-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses on Sunday.

Fincher and Hebert combined to win three races -- the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Distaff Sprint Championship (R) with Diabolical Dame; the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Oaks (R) with Tilla Cat; and the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Lassie Stakes (R) with Sippin.

Fincher’s other win came with Another Brother in the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Stakes (R), while Hebert’s fourth victory came aboard Ten Penny Cents in the 6-furlong, $140,000 New Mexico Cup Derby (R).

A native of Louisiana, Hebert is riding for the first time in New Mexico off of an Arapahoe Park summer meet during which he was the leading Thoroughbred rider with 44 wins from 182 mounts. During his career, which began in 1979, Hebert has ridden the winners of 3,868 races.

On the Quarter Horse side, Daniel Balderrama’s Magnifico Dragon won the day’s richest race, the 400-yard, $314,358 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2). Mauro Salcedo rode the sorrel gelding by Zulu Dragon for trainer Cynthia Gonzalez.

A total of 131 New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses has been entered in Sunday’s New Mexico Cup races at Zia Park. Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
