Fire Stones and Klassic Strawfly Top First Moonflash Maturity Qualifiers

Fire Stones and Klassic Strawfly are the co-fastest qualifiers to the August 28, $150,000-est. First Moonflash Maturity (R) at Albuquerque Downs.

Prepped by Ron Stephens and racing in the first of two trials on Sunday, Fire Stones and Klassic Strawfly finished in a dead heat for the win, as both gelding covered their 400-yard trips in :21.259 while earning 105 speed indexes. J. Martin Bourdieu rode Fire Stones for owner Armando Medina Jr., and Isaias Cardenas was aboard Klassic Strawfly for owner Yaneth Cabrera.

Fire Stones is a 5-year-old Brookstone Bay gelding bred by Margaret Kreins and Sue Ann Kreins. Fire Stones was making his first start since June 27, when he scored a head victory in a 330-yard, $23,200 non-winners-of-three allowance for New Mexico-breds at Albuquerque.

A 10-year-old gelded son of Genuine Strawfly who has won four of his five outs this season, including the May 27 Jimmy Drake Stakes (RG3) for state-breds at SunRay Park, Klassic Strawfly will enter the First Moonflash Maturity with career earnings of $412,271 from 91 starts.

Third-fastest qualifier Mister Brooks won the second heat by one length in :21.459. The 5-year-old son of Brookstone Bay was ridden by Jose Ortiz for owner Juan Esquivel Jr. and trainer Juan Torres.
