First Moonflash Colt Tops Zia Futurity Qualifiers

A Passion For Flashn, a First Moonflash colt owned by RC Racing LLC, is the fastest qualifier to the July 30, $370,820 Zia Futurity (RG1) at Ruidoso Downs.

Ridden by Mauro Salcedo for trainer Martin Orona Sr., A Passion For Flashn on Saturday won the seventh of 10 400-yard trials by 3 1/2 lengths in :19.953. The colt was coming off of a fourth-place finish, 1 1/4 lengths behind winner Daddys Blushing, in the 350-yard, $393,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs on June 17.

A Passion For Flashn was bred by JMH Racing LLC. He has won two of five starts and has earned $36,560.

Second-fastest qualifier Tempting Star Gazer won the first heat by three-quarters of a length in :20.041. Cipriano Vidana rode the First Moonflash gelding for owners Jose R. Espinosa and Jill Giles and trainer Wes Giles.

Tempting Star Gazer was bred by Mike Abraham, and he is a half brother to the stakes-placed Tempting Winner and Winning Runaway. The gelding has won two of his five races and has banked $66,315, and his resume includes a third-place finish, a half of a length behind winner Moneys A Maker, in the April 8, 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Jesse Lane, a homebred son of Jesse James Jr owned by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms of Veguita, New Mexico, and the third-fastest qualifier, won the fourth heat by a neck in :20.064. Rodrigo Vallejo rode the gelding for trainer Judd Kearl.

A half brother to 2009 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly Alice K White, Jesse Lane has won one of three starts and has earned $2,824.

Purses for the 12 races -- eight for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses -- will exceed $2 million, once again making New Mexico Cup day the richest state- or province-bred day of racing in North America.
