First Moonflash Gelding Leads NM Spring Futurity Qualifiers

Sons and daughters of champion First Moonflash, led by fastest qualifier Flash Moonfire, dominated Friday’s 300-yard New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) trials at Sunland Park.

Ridden by Manuel Gutierrez for owner David G. Valdez of Odessa, Texas, and trainer Felipe Flores Jr., Flash Moonfire won the sixth of nine heats by 2 1/2 lengths in :15.244. The brown gelding was making his career debut.

Flash Moonfire was bred by Mike Abraham. Valdez acquired the gelding for $27,000 at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. Flash Moonfire’s dam, the 7-year-old Walk Thru Fire mare Required Fire, won the 2013 Go Josie Go Overnight Handicap at Los Alamitos, and she is a half sister to stakes winner and ’09 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG1) finalist One Hot Mecanic.

Second-fastest qualifier Miles Of Flash won the fifth heat by one length for owner David Barrett and J & SM Inc. Ridden by Esgar Ramirez for trainer Fred Danley, the bay gelding by First Moonflash stopped the timer in :15.424 as the 3-2 favorite.

Miles Of Flash was bred by Mark McCloy. The gelding was purchased for $6,500 at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, and he is out of Laila Si, a winning daughter of Walk Thru Fire and a half sister to graded stakes winner Cassius and multiple stakes winner Whatta Knockout.
