The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the 350-yard, $75,000-added final on May 30.
Jose M. Vigil’s Love Me Caliente, a Corona Caliente gelding trained by James J. Gonzales II, is the 2-1 morning-line favorite in the first of five trials. Love Me Caliente broke his maiden in the 300-yard, $75,000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R) at Sunland Park on April 10.
Other prominent 2-year-olds entered in Thursday’s New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity trials include New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG1) finalist WR Dash, New Mexican Spring Futurity runner-up Famous Caillie, and recent SunRay Park maiden winner Magical Lion.
The New Mexico Breeders’ Futurity has been run at SunRay Park since 2000. Prior to that, the race was run at San Juan Downs in Farmington from 1985 until the track closed in ’93. Past winners of the stakes include Sixy Chamisa, a filly by Sixes Royal who last year set the 350-yard stakes record of :17.10.
