Flash Moonfire is Fastest Qualifier to Mountain Top Futurity
RSS Feeds Friday, June 2, 2017
Flash Moonfire, a gelded son of champion First Moonflash owned by David G. Valdez of Odessa, Texas, is the fastest qualifier to the June 17, $392,555 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs.

Racing in the second of a dozen trials on Friday, Flash Moonfire covered 350 yards in :17.704 while defeating sixth-fastest qualifier Flashy Tres by one length. Oscar Cordova rode the gelding for trainer Juan Esquivel.

Flash Moonfire was bred by Mike Abraham, and he was a $27,000 purchase at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The gelding is the first starter foaled by Required Fire, a stakes-winning 7-year-old daughter of Walk Thru Fire.

Flash Moonfire was one of two 2-year-olds supplemented to the trials for a $15,000 fee. The other, Moneys A Maker, ran second in the 11th heat and failed to make the final.

Second-fastest qualifier Bigg Daddy won the 12th trial by 2 3/4 lengths in :17.794. The son of Big Daddy Cartel and 2009 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly Alice K White was ridden by Adrian Ramos for owner Too For Two and trainer Wes Giles.

Bigg Daddy was bred by Mac and Janis Murray’s MJ Farms at Veguita, New Mexico. A $25,000 buy at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, the sorrel gelding is a half sister to 2015 AQHA champion sophomore filly Astica.

Other prominent qualifiers include Daddys Blushing, a stakes-winning Big Daddy Cartel gelding trained by Jackie Riddle for owner Gary W. Hartstack. Ridden by Francisco Calderon, Daddys Blushing won the sixth heat by 1 1/4 lengths in :17.838 for his third win in as many outs.

Daddys Blushing was bred by MJ Farms. The gelding has banked $18,708, and his resume includes a neck victory in the 330-yard, $48,360 Sam Houston Juvenile Invitational Stakes at Sam Houston Race Park on April 29.
