Esgar Ramirez rode longshot Foolin The Chicks to a half-length win in Saturday's 300-yard, $50,000 West Texas Juvenile Stakes at Sunland Park.
Prepped by Harvey Baeza for owner Guadalupe J. Olivas, Foolin The Chicks stopped the timer in :14.908 and earned a 97 speed index. The victory was the sorrel colt's first in three races.
Foolin The Chicks was bred in California by Vessels Stallion Farm LLC. His sire, the 10-year-old Chicks Beduino stallion Country Chicks Man, earned $736,793 from 13 victories in 38 starts and was the AQHA champion aged stallion in 2006.
Country Chicks Man's top performers include stakes winners What I Want and Chicks Loveta Giggle, and 2010 Heritage Place Futurity (G1) runner-up Knuckles Otoole. The stallion is owned by and stands for a $3,500 fee at Sparky and Denise Mullins' Rafter SM Ranch at Wagoner, Oklahoma.
Foolin The Chicks' dam, Varsity Chick, is a 13-year-old daughter of all-time leading sire First Down Dash.
The $23,735 winner's share of the West Texas Juvenile purse increased Foolin The Chicks' earnings to $26,635. The colt was coming off of a second-place finish to West Texas Futurity (G1) seventh-fastest qualifier Valiant War Hero in a trial on April 1.
TF Featured Effort finished second, a neck in front of VGC Moon Walk. Mama Rosa B, Separate Reb, Corona Princessa, Stirring It Up, WR Penny, No Ordinary Love, and Cajun Mountain Gal completed the official order of finish.
WR Penny crossed the wire fourth, but the Wave Carver filly was disqualified and placed eighth for bearing in in the stretch.
A brown colt by the late Feature Mr Jess racing for SM Cattle Export Co. of Socorro, Texas, and trained by Roberto Sanchez, TF Featured Effort has earned $10,090 from two starts. TF Featured Effort ran third, a half of a length behind West Texas Futurity eighth-fastest qualifier Twilight B in his trial.
VGC Moon Walk is a sorrel colt by Walk Thru Fire who has banked $6,555 from two outs for his owner, Valle Guadiana Corporation. Trained by Juan M. Gonzalez, the colt was coming off of a third-place finish, one length behind West Texas Futurity sixth-fastest qualifier Jockey James, in his trial.
