The 10th annual Zia Festival at Ruidoso Downs is in the books. On Sunday, a crowd of 6,800 saw 10 New Mexico-bred stakes – six for Thoroughbreds and four for Quarter Horses – and it witnessed history when Fullofenergy won the $50,000 Land of Enchantment Handicap (R) for the fourth consecutive season.
Trained by Joel Marr for owners Joe Allen and Mike Stinson, Fullofenergy forced the early pace with Lesters Secret before he reached the wire 1 ½ lengths in front of that rival. The homebred 7-year-old gelding by Desert God covered 7 ½ furlongs in 1:32.13 under jockey Carlos Madeira.
Fullofenergy is believed to be the first horse in New Mexico racing history to win the same stakes four consecutive years.
“He loves it here – he’s run his best races here,” said Marr of the gelding. “This (7 ½-furlong) distance is his distance, and this is his track.
“This track is soft, and he has some trouble on some of the harder surfaces,” added the trainer. “We’d planned on having him here and ready to go for this race.”
PB And Crackers and Train Rider Blues were the Zia Festival’s other repeat winners. A 4-year-old gelding by The Down Side, PB And Crackers won the 400-yard, $50,000 Zia Handicap (G2) for owners R.D. Hubbard and Shaun Hubbard for the second straight year.
Train Rider Blues, the winner of last year’s Rio Grande Senor Futurity (R) for 2-year-old colts and geldings for owners Freda McSwane and Joe Walters, won Sunday’s 5 ½-furlong, $50,000 Road Runner Handicap (R) for 3-year-olds.
A synopsis of every Zia Festival stakes follows. Complete coverage of the will be featured in the next issue of The New Mexico Horse Breeder Magazine.
