RSS Feeds Sunday, May 20, 2012
Esgar Ramirez rode Fury Of The Storm to a neck victory in Sunday's 400-yard, $75,000 New Mexico Breeders' Stakes (RG3) for state-bred 3-year-olds at SunRay Park.

Trained by Roberto Sanchez for owners SM Cattle Export Co. of Socorro, Texas, and Jaime Dominguez, Fury Of The Storm reached the wire in :19.768 and earned an 84 speed index. The $45,000 winner's share of the purse pushed his bankroll to $192,231, of which $162,546 has been earned this year.

Fury Of The Storm was bred by Bill and Sandy Miller. The bay colt's sire, Furyofthewind, is a 9-year-old son of Corona Cartel and AQHA champion Dashing Phoebe who won the 2006 AQHA California Derby Challenge Stakes at Los Alamitos.

Furyofthewind's top runners include 2011 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG2) winner Quatro Menudos and U R A Fury Lady, the winner of the $71,483 New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) at The Downs at Albuquerque in '10. A half brother to AQHA champions Heartswideopen and Special Phoebe, the stallion is owned by Kirk Goodfellow and stands for a $2,000 fee at Bob Moore Farms in Norman, Oklahoma.

Fury Of The Storm's dam, Bubbles Bunny, is a winning 15-year-old daughter of the Bunny Bid stallion Sail On Bunny.

All told, Fury Of The Storm has won four of eight starts, including the February 19, $110,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders' Association (RG2) stakes for state-bred sophomores at Sunland Park. The colt's stakes resume also includes a second-place finish to First Blazin Love in the 400-yard, $286,364 Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) at Sunland.

Sent to post as the 2-1 second choice in the field of nine, Fury Of The Storm returned a $6 win mutuel and paired with runner-up Untangled Vines, a 14-1 longshot, for an $82 ($2) exacta. Sparklin Royal, a 26-1 longshot, ran third, one length behind the winner, to complete a $2 trifecta payoff of $626.40.

First Blazin Love, the 6-5 favorite, ran fourth and was followed by My Big Chief, Lttle Lighting, Caliente Colt, A Royal Debt, and Latest Policy. Runaway Sham Bo was listed as a trainer scratch.

Untangled Vines is a sorrel gelding by Jesse James Jr racing for Yaneth Cabrera. A one-time $15,000 claimer who has been campaigned exclusively in New Mexico, Untangled Vines has won two of 15 outs and has banked $61,358.

Sparklin Royal is a homebred gray daughter of Sixes Royal owned by Gary C. Kloppenburg of Corrales, New Mexico. Sparklin Royal has won four of 14 races, including the 400-yard, $77,114 New Mexico State Fair Senorita Futurity (RG3) at Albuquerque as the 19-10 choice, and she has earned $105,162, of which $91,982 was gained during her 2-year-old season.
