Graded Stakes Winner Moonifisant is Fastest NM Cup Futurity Qualifier

Making his first start in two months, Moonifisant scored a three-quarter length victory in the last of seven New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) trials at Zia Park on Saturday.

Moonifsant covered 400 yards in :19.254 under jockey Tanner Thedford and set the fastest qualifying time for the $300,000-est. New Mexico Cup Futurity final on October 27. Juan M. Gonzalez trained the Sixes Royal colt or owners Peter B. Gallegos, Robert Sanchez, and Patricia Gonzalez.

Moonfisant has earned $132,535 from five starts, and the colt’s four wins include a half-length victory as the fastest qualifier in the April 7, $231,438 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

Second-fastest qualifier Mitey Moon ran second in the last heat. The homebred brown daughter of champion and 2008 New Mexico Cup Derby (RG1) winner First Moonflash was a finalist in the June 15, $357,030 Mountain Top Futurity (R) at Ruidoso Downs for owner Debra Laney of Tularosa, New Mexico.

Trainer Joel Marr tallied his 1,000th career Thoroughbred win in Tuesday’s 11th and final race at Zia Park. Marr’s milestone victory came with Sweet Diamond, a 3-year-old Attila’s Storm filly owned by Rodney Brooks and Donnie Reid and ridden by Ken Tohill, in a 1-mile race for New Mexico-bred maiden $6,500 claimers.
