Graded Stakes Winner Teana Fay Returns in Sunburst Stakes
RSS Feeds Friday, April 1, 2016
Teana Fay, a sorrel Winners Version filly owned by Jimmy Negrete and Jimmy Vasquez, drew post 6 for Sunday’s 350-yard, $85,000 Sunburst Stakes (RG3) for New Mexico-bred 3-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.

Trained by Juan M. Gonzalez, Teana Fay will be shortening in distance off of her head victory over Princess Jesse in the 400-yard, $85,000 New Mexico Horse Breeders’ Association Stakes (RG3) at Sunland on February 28. The filly, a $25,000 purchase at the 2014 New Mexico-Bred Yearling Sale at Ruidoso Downs, has won two of 11 outs and has earned $112,817, and she was a finalist in last year’s 400-yard, $281,000 New Mexico Cup Futurity (RG2) at Zia Park, and 350-yard, $350,000 Mountain Top Futurity (RG3) at Ruidoso Downs.

Salvador Martinez will ride Teana Fay in the Sunburst Stakes. The filly’s eight opponents include Princess Jesse, a homebred daughter of Jesse James Jr trained by Eric Mikkelson for owner Vance Mikkelson of Belen, New Mexico. Princess Jesse has banked $64,860 from six outs and will be ridden by Alejandro Medellin from post 7 on Sunday.

Other contenders include graded stakes winner Carson City Girl and the undefeated JJ Jessies Girl. A Woodbridge filly trained by Fred Danley for owners David and Sandra Barrett, Carson City Girl outran her 18-1 odds to win the January 17, 400-yard Shue Fly Stakes (RG2) for state-bred sophomores. Carson City Girl drew the rail post and will be ridden by Larry Gamez in the Sunburst.

JJ Jessies Girl has won both of her races for owners Sam Sandoval, Jonna Sandoval, Benny Holder and Jo Ann Holder. A homebred filly by the Chicks A Blazin stallion Jess A Chicks, JJ Jessies Girl is coming off of a half-length victory in a February 27, 350-yard non-winners-of-two allowance for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park.

Bonifacio Perez will ride JJ Jessies Girl from post 9 for trainer Nancy Summers.

The complete lineup for the Sunburst Stakes, in post position order including jockey assignments and morning-line odds -- Carson City Girl (Larry Gamez), 7-2; Shes A Blazin Winner (Jaime P. Leos), 15-1; Ms Blu Moon (Felipe Garcia-Luna), 6-1; RF Jessies Girl (Sergio Becerra Jr.), 8-1; Serena James (Adrian Ramos), 12-1; Teana Fay (Salvador Martinez), 3-1; Princess Jesse (Alejandro Medellin), 5-1; Msferrari Edition (Jose Enrique Ortiz), 20-1; and JJ Jessies Girl (Bonifacio Perez), 4-1.
