RSS Feeds Sunday, January 1, 2017
Happy Hennessy, a homebred Roll Hennessy Roll gelding owned and trained by Fred Danley, is one of 10 New Mexico-bred newly turned 3-year-olds entered in Sunday’s 6-furlong, $85,000 4 Rivers/John Deere Stakes (R) at Sunland Park.

Happy Hennessy will be shortening in distance off of his seven-length victory in the 1-mile and 70-yard Eddy County Stakes (R) at Zia Park on November 23. The gelding earned $148,770 from nine outs last season.

Happy Hennessy drew post 9 and will be ridden by Enrique Gomez. His nine opponents include Orville L. Blades’ Waitingonasunnyday and R.D. Hubbard’s Go For A Stroll, a pair of promising geldings who will be facing winners for the first time.

A gelded son of Weather Warning and the stakes-placed In Excess (IRE) mare Streakin Excess, Waitingonasunnyday made his debut with a 4 3/4-length victory in a 5 1/2-furlong, $22,000 maiden-special-weight dash for New Mexico-breds at Sunland Park on December 18. The gelding drew post 10 and will be ridden by Ruby Gonzalez for trainer O.D. Jamison Sr.

Go For A Stroll drew post 5 and will be ridden by Tracy Hebert for trainer Todd Fincher. A homebred son of Attila’s Storm and a full brother to 2016 Lincoln Handicap (R) winner Stormy Day, the gelding made his debut with a half-length score in a 5 1/2-furlong, $26,000 state-bred maiden-special-weight sprint at Zia Park on November 7.

Dom Strait, a stakes-placed maiden racing for Tom and Sandy McKenna’s Judge Lanier Racing and trained by Miguel Hernandez, drew post 2 and will be seeking his first career victory on Sunday. The homebred Dominique’s Cat gelding is coming off of a second-place finish to Happy Hennessy in the Eddy County Stakes.
