RSS Feeds Monday, March 27, 2017
Hence, a homebred colt by Street Boss trained by Steve Asmussen for owner Calumet Farm, outran his 10-1 odds to win Sunday’s 1 1/8-mile, $800,000 Sunland Derby (G3) at Sunland Park.

Ridden by local jockey Alfredo Juarez Jr., the meet’s second-leading Thoroughbred rider by wins, Hence covered his 9-furlong trip in 1:48.10, and his winning margin was 3 3/4 lengths from Conquest Mo Money. In addition to earning the $480,000 winner’s share of the purse and his first stakes victory, the colt earned 50 qualifying points toward a starting berth in this year’s 1 1/4-mile, $2-million Kentucky Derby (G1), which will be contested on May 6 at Churchill Downs.

Hence was coming off of a seventh-place finish in the 1 1/16-mile, $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) on February 20 at Oaklawn Park. The colt has won two of six outs and has banked $542,601.

The Sunland Derby was good for the local connections. In addition to the race being won by a Sunland Park-based jockey, Conquest Mo Money races for longtime New Mexico owners Tom and Sandy McKenna’s Judge Lanier Racing. A New York-bred colt by Uncle Mo trained by Miguel Hernandez and ridden in all four of his starts by Jorge Carreno, Conquest Mo Money collected 20 points toward a Kentucky Derby berth, and he stands in a tie for 14th on the Kentucky Derby points list.

Sunday’s 1 1/16-mile, $200,000 Sunland Park Oaks was won by Ghalia, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’Oro trained by Todd Pletcher for owner Sumaya U.S. Stable. Ghalia was ridden by Jose Ortiz, and the filly has won all of her three starts and has earned $166,800, and her neck victory in the Sunland Park Oaks earned her 50 points toward a possible starting berth in the May 5, $1-million Kentucky Oaks (G1) for 3-year-old fillies at Churchill Downs.

A total of seven stakes were run at Sunland Park on Sunday, including three for New Mexico-bred Thoroughbreds. Pink Cadillac, a homebred daughter of Diabolical trained by Joel Marr for owners J. Kirk and Judy Robison of El Paso, Texas, scored a neck victory over odds-on favorite Sippin in the $100,000 New Mexico Breeders’ Oaks (R) for 3-year-old fillies.

Ridden by Ken Tohill, Pink Cadillac went 1 1/16 miles in 1:45.73 while earning her second win in nine starts and pushing her bankroll to $115,200.

Woodacouldadid shocked her opposition by winning the $85,000 La Coneja Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies and mares at odds of 34-1. Ridden by Elvin Gonzalez for owner Terrine G. Ransier and trainer Jose Gonzalez Jr., the homebred 6-year-old Minister Eric mare went 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:06.65, and her margin of victory was a half of a length from 8-5 favorite Diabolical Dame.
