Highspeed Rescue overcame a poor start to win Sunday’s one-mile, $120,000 Enchantress Stakes (R) for New Mexico-bred 2-year-old fillies at Sunland Park.
Owned and trained by Barbara Jean Brown, Highspeed Rescue covered her eight furlong trip in 1:39.97, closing off of the fractions of :22.22 and :46.34 set by pacesetter Tin Can Kitty. Jockey Joe Martinez rode the dark bay or brown Union Mills filly to her second win in eight starts and first stakes victory.
Highspeed Rescue was bred by Ernest Riggs, and the filly became the first stakes winner from four starters sired by Union Mills, a winning son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Gulch and a half brother to Laurie Begone, a filly by St. Jovite who won the 2002 Brookmeade Stakes (R) on the turf at Colonial Downs in Virginia. Now 13, Union Mills has sired the earners of more than $146,600 from three crops. The stallion is owned by Riggs and stands at his farm in Arrey, New Mexico.
Highspeed Rescue is the first starter foaled by her dam, the Maryland-bred Allen’s Prospect mare Rescue Me. Now 13, Rescue Me is a half sister to Potomac City, a colt by Citidancer who ran second in the 2000 Bobby Hale Stakes at Timonium Racecourse in Maryland.
Highspeed Rescue’s third dam, the late King’s Bishop mare Check The Queen, produced six winners from nine starters, including Wainee Church, a stakes-winning filly by Hawaii who ran second in the 1986 Maryland Juvenile Filly Championship (R) at Laurel Park.
Highspeed Rescue traces back to her third dam, the late Johns Joy mare Euphorbia. A 1964 Kentucky-bred foal, Euphorbia produced nine winners from 13 starters, including the stakes-winning King’s Bishop filly Chasuble.
The $72,000 winner’s share of the Enchantress Stakes’ purse pushed Highspeed Rescue’s earnings to $111,334. The filly was seven weeks removed from a third-place finish in the 6-furlong, $152,690 New Mexico Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes (R) at Zia Park, and earlier this year she was a finalist in the fillies division of the Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland Park.
A 21-1 longshot, Highspeed Rescue returned a $4 win mutuel. Shamrock Girl, the 6-5 favorite, ran second, 3 ½ lengths behind the winner and completed a ($2) exacta payoff of $143.40. Squall Wilbud, the 19-10 second choice finished third to round out a $132 ($1) trifecta return.
Like The Wind, Squallena, Tequila Moonrise, Ruby Tequila, Carmon’s Trick, AJ’s Flicka, and Tin Can Kitty completed the order of finish.
Shamrock Girl is a bay daughter of King Bull owned and trained by David Woluchuk, and the $25,200 second-place share of the purse increased her bankroll to $136,288. Shamrock Girl’s four wins in eight outs include a 6 ¼-length score in the 6-furlong, $67,412 Dessie & Fern Sawyer Futurity (R) for New Mexico-bred fillies at The Downs at Albuquerque on September 26. The filly also ran second in the New Mexico Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes.
A homebred daughter of Squall campaigned by W.T. Stradley and Tom Williams of Hobbs, New Mexico, Squall Wilbud was coming off of a neck victory in the New Mexico Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes. The filly earned $12,000 to push her bankroll to $214,808 from two wins in 10 starts. On April 17, Squall Wilbud scored a two-length victory in the fillies division of the $133,436 Copper Top Futurity (R) at Sunland.
